BTCV staff train staff as Mental Health First Aiders May

Staff working for BTCV have undergone Mental Health First Training.

BTCV approached us at the beginning of the year to deliver two of the courses to staff in the Durham area and the courses have proven so popular with staff that another course has been booked.

Emma Christopher, Youth Volunteer Development Manager for Vinvolved team in Durham attended one of the courses; ‘I now feel confident to deal with situations with those who have mental health issues, the course is suitable for all those working in a support role in the voluntary sector and I would recommend it to anyone’

Marc Simpson Youth Volunteer Development Manager also attended the course ‘it went above and beyond what I expected there was a lot of detail and information which will help me immensely.’ Go to http://www2.btcv.org.uk/ for more information about BTCV.

Barclaycard utilise the course to improve staff wellbeing March

HR specialists, managers and union representatives from Barclaycard in Stockton have recently undertaken the two day training course and it has already begun to improve the wellbeing of their staff. Two more courses have already been arranged for other managers and staff due to the positive impact the training has had.

Caroline Stevens, Team Manager, has already been able to directly help two members of her team; ”The course helped me recognise characteristics which a colleague was displaying which helped me identify that they needed some help and has also enabled me to help another  team member who has suffered with long term anxiety issues.”

Lisa Clarke, Service Delivery Manager, has also utilised the skills taught on the course;

”With the skills and information I learnt on the course I have already managed to point people in the direction of their GP for advice and support on Mental Health problems.”

According to the National Office of Statistics, the Finance industry had the highest recorded absence rates compared to all other industries with stress being the second most common reason for absenc. Barclaycard employs over 900 people in Stockton and inevitably staff are affected by stress and mental health issues that are not always work related.

Sean Green, Learning Co-Coordinator for Unite (working at the Barclaycard site), prompted managers to provide the training after hearing about the positive effects the course has from peers at a Union event; “Mental Health issues touch everyone and with recent government figures showing mental health problems are one of the biggest causes of absence at work, I felt the Mental Health First Aid course would be an ideal way to deal with this growing problem. Working in a financial environment can be stressful and demanding and this can occasionally lead to serious mental health problems. If symptoms are recognised early by colleagues and managers, these can be treated more quickly and in the right manner which will ultimately improve the long-term wellbeing of the individual.”

 By training their managers and support staff in Mental Health First Aid, Barclaycard anticipates a dramatic fall in stress related absence. The Mental Health First Aid course aims to help any individual who may come across someone with a mental health issue in their personal or professional life. The course teaches the person to recognise different Mental Health problems; Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Psychotic Disorders such as Schizophrenia and Bi-polar (manic depression) and also teaches the individual how to confidently deal with a person experiencing distress with one of these problems.

Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Services Feb 2010

Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Services have been set up across England to help young people who are experiencing psychotic experiences for the first time, whatever the cause may be.

EIP teams are usually made up of a range of mental health professionals including doctors, nurses, social workers, support workers and psychologists.

The services work closely with young people and their families (or people close to them) to help them to get back on their feet again and to get on with their lives. We know that in the past some people who developed psychotic experiences often didn’t get appropriate help soon enough and their psychosis was often left untreated.

EIP services aim to see people as quickly as possible and to give them and their families the specific help they need.

This might be information or help to make sense of what’s going on, medication, help with finances, help with school, college or an employer, individual or family therapy or merely someone to talk to.

By getting in as early as possible they aim to minimise the disruption that psychosis can bring to young people who may experience psychosis and their families. For and EIP service in your area visit: http://www.aminormal.org/eip.htm

Mental Health First Aid Conference Dec 2009

Over 200 people attended the MHFA conference on behalf of the North East Mind MHFA partnership at Durham County Cricket Club, Chester Le Street on the 4th of December.

Emma Howitt, Chief Executive of Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind introduced the event followed by various notable speakers in Mental Health – each discussing the valuable role Mental Health First Aid has in improving awareness and delivery of Mental Health support at a grass-roots level.

Full Conference programme

Those who had completed MHFA previously then attended a seminar on suicide prevention by Julie Mackenzie, Nurse Consultant from CRHT Newcastle and North Tyneside Hospital and those who were new to MHFA attended a taster session for the course, led by trainer Emma Power.

The taster session received excellent feedback and many of those who attended the session are booked to attend the full course in the future;

‘As a result of the taster session I have learnt that everyone faces mental health problems in their lives’ Daria Allison, Acumen Development Trust

‘Through the taster session I have a greater insight into the training offered and have a clarification of specific areas of mental health’ Joanne Turns, University of Sunderland

The taster session was interesting and has inspired me to want to do the full two day course’ Barbara Scullion, University of Sunderland

A big ‘Thanks’ go out to all those who attended and spoke at the conference. Please find presentations given on the day below.
